The goalkeeper is the last line of defense. His mistakes are seen by everyone. His saves are remembered for a long time. The position of the goalkeeper is unique: he plays with his hands, wears different attire, often alone in his own penalty area. We tell you about the psychology, technique, and legends of the goalkeeper's craft.
The goalkeeper is the only one who can touch the ball with his hands (in his own penalty area). But this is also his curse: if he makes a mistake with his hands, there will be a penalty. He must be brave (dive into the feet, catch the ball in a fall). He has protective gear (gloves, knee pads, shields). He is constantly tense (90 minutes without the right to make a mistake). He is often changed at the end of the match (to drag out the time). The goalkeeper often becomes the captain (Lev Yashin, Manuel Neuer).
The ability to forget mistakes. Missed a goal — forget it, don't let it break you. Concentration. You can't disconnect for a second (even when the ball is in the opponent's goal). Confidence. Fluctuations are transmitted to defenders, they start to panic. Calmness. The goalkeeper should not scream at the defense but should lead. The ability to withstand pressure. If you are about to take a penalty, 90% of success is psychology.
Goalkeepers are often eccentric (this is a protective mechanism).
Catching the ball: on the run (in a jump), low (in a fall), on the spot (to the chest). Blocking: with a fist (on the run), with the palm (in a jump). Playing with feet: pass, ball-in, interception. Positioning: distance from the goal, angle of shooting. Playing on the run: intercepting through balls, corners. In modern football, the goalkeeper must be able to play with his feet (like a field player). Examples: Neuer, Ederson.
Lev Yashin (USSR) — the only goalkeeper to receive the "Golden Ball". Known for his black sweater ("black panther"). Gianluigi Buffon (Italy) — played until he was 45 years old. Manuel Neuer (Germany) — changed the role of the goalkeeper (became a "libero"). Iker Casillas (Spain) — a legend of Real Madrid and the national team. Petr Cech (Czech Republic) — known for his helmet after a head injury.
In Russia: Rinat Dasaev, Igor Akinfeev.
Start better at 8-10 years old (when coordination is developed). Required: bravery (not afraid of the ball and hits), quick reaction, good jump. Study the technique of catching and blocking. Watch video lessons. Don't be afraid to miss goals. Goalkeeper is 50% talent, 50% training.
Tip: play futsal (there the goalkeeper often enters the game).
