Vinegar is perhaps the most undervalued product in the home. Its acidic smell repels many, but those who know the value of cleanliness keep not one bottle on the shelf. Table vinegar (9%), apple cider vinegar, wine vinegar, white spirit vinegar — each is good for its purpose. It disinfects, dissolves grease, kills mold, removes limescale, and can even replace expensive fabric softener. And all this for a few cents. In 2026, when eco-friendliness and economy become the main trends, vinegar is experiencing a renaissance. We tell you how to use it wisely and without damaging the equipment.

Removing Limescale in Kettles and Coffee Machines

Limescale is the enemy of heating elements. Vinegar deals with it better than many commercial products. For the kettle: mix water and 9% vinegar in a 2:1 ratio (for severe limescale — 1:1). Fill the kettle, boil, leave for 2-3 hours (or overnight). Then pour out, rinse thoroughly, and boil with clean water 2-3 times to remove the smell. For the coffee machine: dilute vinegar with water 1:1, run through a cycle without coffee, then 2 cycles with clean water. Important: do not use vinegar for aluminum kettles (it will discolor), only for stainless steel, glass, and ceramics.

Cleaning Washing Machines and Dishwashers

Washing machine: pour 100-200 ml of 9% vinegar into the detergent compartment. Run an empty wash cycle at the maximum temperature (60-90°C) without laundry. Vinegar will remove limescale from the heating element, mold from the seal, and eliminate unpleasant odors. After the cycle, wipe the seal. For the dishwasher: place a glass of vinegar on the top shelf, run an empty cycle at a high temperature. Shine and cleanliness guaranteed. Do not do this more than once every 1-2 months to avoid eating away the rubber seals.

Eliminating Mold and Mildew

Black mold in the corners of the bathroom, on silicone seams, under the sink. Spray undiluted 9% vinegar from a spray bottle, leave for 30-60 minutes, then scrub with a brush. Vinegar kills mold spores (but does not bleach walls like chlorine). For severe infestations, repeat several days in a row. Work with gloves and a mask (the fumes are caustic). After treatment, ventilate the room. Vinegar does not wash off stubborn stains but prevents the growth of new mold.

Removing Odors from Refrigerators, Shoes, and Trash Cans

Vinegar neutralizes unpleasant odors, not masking them. For the refrigerator: wipe the shelves with a solution of water and vinegar (1:1). For shoes: dampen a cotton ball with vinegar (weak), wipe the inside surface, leave overnight. For the trash can: wash it with a vinegar and water solution. Vinegar also helps get rid of the smell of cat urine (rinse the spot with 9% vinegar, then water). Do not use on painted surfaces (it may fade).

Washing Windows and Mirrors Without Streaks

Mix water and vinegar (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of liquid soap. Apply to the glass, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. Vinegar dissolves greasy film, soap helps with distribution, and no streaks remain. Cheaper and more eco-friendly than any commercial "misters." For shine, wipe with a dry newspaper (but better with microfiber to avoid scratching).

Cleaning Plumbing and Removing Limescale

Faucets, showerheads, taps. Soak a rag in 9% vinegar, wrap around the soiled area, leave for an hour. Scrub with a brush. For the showerhead: submerge it in a container of vinegar overnight. For severe scale, use vinegar essence (70%), but be careful — it is aggressive. Do not apply to chrome-plated parts with damaged coatings (it may cause corrosion). After cleaning, rinse with water.

Fabric Softener and Removing Limescale from Irons

Add 50-100 ml of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment during the wash cycle. This will soften the water, add brightness, remove sweat odor and static electricity. Vinegar does not leave a smell after rinsing. For the iron: mix vinegar with water 1:1, pour into the reservoir, set the iron vertically and turn on the steam (over the sink). Limescale will come out with the steam. Then rinse with clean water.

Combating Weeds and Ants on the Garden

Vinegar is a natural herbicide. Spray weeds in the cracks between tiles, on paths with undiluted vinegar. The acid burns the leaves. Do not use on beds with cultivated plants! For ants: pour vinegar (9%) into the ant hill or places of their accumulation. The acid eats away the chitinous exoskeleton. The method is inhumane but effective.

Conservation and Cooking

Vinegar is a classic preservative for pickles, marinades, sauces. But remember: vinegar essence requires dilution (1:11 to get 6% vinegar). Do not use essence for cleaning — it is too aggressive. Apple cider vinegar (4-6%) is good for salad dressings, it is softer. Do not store vinegar in plastic bottles (it eats away over time).

Vinegar is a real lifesaver for the home. But remember about safety: work with gloves, do not inhale fumes (especially essence), do not mix with chlorine (toxic gas is released). And do not pour vinegar into damaged enamel or aluminum. By following these rules, vinegar will become your main helper.

This article examines freestyle skiing as a dynamic winter sport that combines traditional skiing techniques with aerial acrobatics and high-speed maneuvers. Based on analysis of Olympic history, disciplinary specifications, and competitive developments, the article reconstructs the evolution of freestyle skiing from its countercultural origins in the 1960s to its current status as one of the most spectacular disciplines of the Winter Olympics. Particular attention is devoted to the seven distinct disciplines comprising the sport, their scoring methodologies, the technological evolution of equipment, and the star athletes who have shaped the sport's development. The upcoming Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games, featuring the debut of dual moguls and the addition of a fifteenth medal event, serve as the focal point for examining contemporary freestyle skiing.
