Strawberry Day: A Celebration of a Sweet Berry with Sharp Edges

July 23rd is the day when strawberries are especially abundant on market shelves and in gardens. An unofficial but heartfelt celebration — Strawberry Day. It coincides with the peak season for this berry in the temperate zone, and this is no coincidence. Nature itself signals to us when we need to stock up on vitamins and enjoy the taste. But strawberries are not just a pleasant sweetness. They are a whole pharmacy in a single berry. And, like any pharmacy, they have their dosages and contraindications. So what is their strength and when can they be a weak point?

Why Strawberries Are a Superfood That Doesn't Need Marketing

Strawberries are one of the most vitamin and mineral-rich berries. They contain vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system, vitamin A for vision and skin, vitamins of the B group for the nervous system, vitamin E — a powerful antioxidant. Potassium supports the heart and blood vessels, magnesium soothes muscles, and iron helps in blood formation. Moreover, strawberries contain manganese, copper, zinc, and fluorine. But their main wealth is salicylates, natural derivatives of aspirin, which have antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. That's why strawberry jam is a classic remedy for colds.

In addition, strawberries are a record holder for dietary fiber content, which improves the work of the intestines and promotes the cleansing of the body. There are about 6 grams of fiber in 100 grams of berries. The antioxidants in strawberries, especially ellagic acids, bind free radicals, slowing down the aging process and reducing the risk of certain types of cancer. This is not just nice words — research confirms that regular consumption of strawberries positively affects many systems of the body.

When Strawberries Can Be Harmful: Main Contraindications

Despite all the benefits, strawberries are not an innocent product. Firstly, they contain a lot of acids that can irritate the gastric mucosa in gastritis or peptic ulcers. It is especially dangerous to eat them on an empty stomach or in large quantities. Secondly, salicylates, which have a therapeutic effect, can be dangerous for people with an allergy to aspirin or with bronchial asthma triggered by salicylates.

Moreover, strawberries are a strong allergen. Some people develop skin rashes, itching, and even swelling from them. This is due to the presence of proteins and aromatic compounds that may be intolerable to the body. Strawberries should be given to children under one year of age, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women — due to the possible allergic reaction. And, of course, people with diabetes should consider that strawberries contain a lot of natural sugars, although in smaller quantities than in grapes or bananas, but it is still worth controlling portions.

Strawberries in Folk Medicine: Not Just Jam

In addition to the berries, folk medicine actively uses leaves, branches, and even roots of strawberries. Infusions of leaves help with throat inflammation, as a diuretic, and even as a soft means for normalizing the menstrual cycle. Tea from branches of strawberries is an excellent diaphoretic for the first symptoms of a cold. Roots of strawberries are used in the treatment of some skin diseases and even as a vermifuge.

However, it is important to remember: remedies based on leaves and branches can affect the tone of the uterus, so they are not recommended for pregnant women. Moreover, do not engage in self-medication without consulting a doctor, especially if you have chronic diseases.

How to Eat Strawberries Properly to Get the Most Benefit

To get the most benefit from strawberries, not harm, follow a few simple rules. Firstly, do not eat them in unlimited quantities. For an adult, 200–300 grams per day is enough, for children — 50–100 grams. Secondly, it is better to eat them in the first half of the day, when the body actively processes sugars. Thirdly, combine strawberries with dairy products — for example, with cottage cheese or yogurt, to mitigate the effect of acids.

Strawberries are good both fresh and frozen, and in the form of jam. However, some vitamins are destroyed during thermal processing, so fresh berries are always preferable. If you are making jam, try to cook it for a short time or use the \"five-minute\" method to preserve the maximum amount of beneficial properties.

On Strawberry Day, it is especially pleasant to pick a basket of fresh berries and enjoy their taste. But remember: even the best gift from nature has its limits. Listen to your body, do not overeat, and then strawberries will bring only joy and health.
