The secret of DJI's success lies in a unique combination of technological leadership, deep vertical integration, and aggressive pricing policy, allowing the company to transform from a niche startup into a global monopolist.

Technological Leadership and Innovation

The company, founded in 2006 in the dormitory of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology by Wan Tao, initially focused on creating affordable flight control systems. The key breakthrough was the release in 2013 of the Phantom drone, which became the first fully assembled drone for mass consumers: it worked out of the box, was priced affordably, and was easy to operate. This gave DJI a first-mover advantage and allowed it to set industry standards.

Vertical Integration and the Speed of Shenzhen

Unlike many competitors that rely on outsourcing, DJI designs and produces key components itself. This includes engines, batteries, stabilization systems, and software. The placement of production in Shenzhen gave access to the most developed supply chain for electronics in the world, allowing for a sharp reduction in product launch time and cost. As of 2024, about twenty-five percent of the company's fourteen thousand employees are engaged in research and development.

Market Dominance and Diversification

Today, DJI controls between seventy and eighty-three percent of the global market for consumer and commercial drones. The company's revenue in 2025 exceeded eight hundred billion yuan.

In addition to drones, the company has successfully diversified into related fields. Stabilizers and cameras: technologies developed for drones laid the foundation for popular stabilizers and portable cameras. The \"Pocket 3\" model sold more than ten million units in two years. Ecosystem: in 2017, DJI acquired a controlling stake in the legendary Swedish photography equipment manufacturer Hasselblad, strengthening its position in the professional filming segment. Expansion into the corporate sector: the company actively develops mobile sensor technologies for agriculture, cartography, infrastructure inspection, and public safety.

Challenges and Pressure

DJI's success faces serious geopolitical pressure. The United States imposes restrictions on the company under the pretext of national security threats. Thus, in December 2025, the Federal Communications Commission added DJI to the list of controlled companies, effectively banning the sale of new drones in the US. However, despite this, DJI's products remain critically important for the American market: the use of its drones generates more than one hundred and sixty-six billion dollars in economic benefits and supports more than four hundred and fifty thousand jobs in the US.
