March 5, 2000 marks the 80th anniversary of Doctor of Philology, Professor Viktor Noyevich Yarkho , an outstanding scientist and teacher, whose works are widely known not only in all the republics of the former Soviet Union, but also in many countries of the "far abroad". More than 60 of his works have been published in German, Italian, English, Chinese, Greek, and Hungarian, not counting about one and a half hundred articles in the two-volume "Myths of the Peoples of the World", published in Hungarian translation. For many years he was a member of the editorial board of the journal Philologus, and is currently a member of the international Scientific Committee of the journal Eikasmos, published in Bologna.

V. I. Yarkho's research interests have changed little in recent years[1]. As before, the main object of his research is ancient Greek poetry of the archaic and classical periods. The most important works in this field over the last decade are: an exhaustive apparatus (articles, notes, dictionaries) prepared for the new edition of the Odyssey translated by Zhukovsky in Literary Monuments; a one-volume book " Hellene-

Russian poets of the VII-III centuries BC" (compilation, introductory article, notes), filling in the gap that exists in the view of a wide range of readers about ancient Greek poetry (Moscow: Ladomir, 1999); articles, translation editors, real and textual commentary in the publication " Sophocles. Dramas "(1990); translation of fragments and reconstruction of eleven Euripides ' tragedies of intrigue and chance (VDI. 1995. N 3-4; 1996. N 1-2) - this collection can be considered a kind of supplement to the two-volume edition of Euripides in Inn translations published in 1998 with the participation of V. N. Yarkho. Annensky; articles, notes, and translations of ancient testimonies prepared for the two-volume edition of Aristophanes published in Literary Monuments, translated by Andrey Piotrovsky. V. N. Yarkho presented his idea of the path traversed by ancient Greek and Roman drama over four centuries in a short monograph " Ancient Drama. Technology of mastery" (Moscow, 1990).

The hero of the day's attention to papyrus finds did not weaken, which was reflected in articles published in VDI (1993. N 3; 1997. N 1).

V. N. Yarkho's interest in mythography, which emerged during his work in the BSE and Myths of the Peoples of the World, has developed very fruitfully in recent years. The translation of Palefatus published in 1988 (VDI. N 3-4) was supplemented by translations published in the same place with introductory articles by Parthenius and Antoninus Liberalus (1992. N 1-2; 1997. N 3-4). Together with the introductory article, commented translations by Gigin, Diktis, Daret, and some other sources, they are now included in the capital set of Ancient Mythographers prepared for publication under the editorship of L. M. Gasparov. The First Vatican Mythographer, translated into Russian and commented on by V. N. Yarkho, is published in the Alethea Publishing house.

Since the mid-90s, V. N. Yarkho left his teaching job at MGLU, which he devoted about 50 years to. Since 1955, he was the head of the Department of Classical Philology there, where, on his initiative and with his direct participation, the basic principles of teaching Latin in foreign language institutes were developed. The result of this work was a textbook of the Latin language created at the department, designed specifically for language universities (1st ed.-1961) and almost immediately became a stereotype for all institutes and faculties of foreign languages in the former Soviet Union. To date, this textbook has gone through six editions, which proves that it meets the methodological requirements of specialized Latin teaching.

Later, under the guidance of V. N. Yarkho and also with his active participation, with the involvement of other specialists, the department compiled a dictionary-reference book " Ancient Culture. Literature, Theater, Art, Philosophy, Science" (Moscow: Vysshaya Shkola, 1995). Intended for students of the humanities, this dictionary provides them with the most necessary information in these areas in a concise form, at the level of modern scientific ideas.

Thus, the life path of V. N. Yarkho provides a good example of combining a scientist and a teacher in one person, whose teaching skills are remembered by more than one generation of his former students and students of the Faculty of Advanced Training of Latin language teachers. Sincere appreciation and gratitude are reserved for V. N. Yarkho and his colleagues in the department, most of whom started their teaching activities under his guidance.

It remains to add that neither the age nor the change in the situation affected the creative activity of V. N. Yarkho in any way. It was in recent years, already in France, that he prepared the above-mentioned works for the Odyssey and the First Vatican Mythographer, not counting a number of articles and reviews. In 1997 and 1998, V. N. Yarkho took part in absentia in two conferences in memory of I. M. Troisky in St. Petersburg (the first of them presented the report " Professor Iosif Moiseevich Troisky in his letters. To the centenary of his birth" published in VDI. 1997. N 4).

The Rector's Office and the Department of Classical Philology of the Moscow State University, employees of the Department of Ancient History, members of the VDI Editorial Board and Editorial Board wish Viktor Yarkho to keep his energy, efficiency and purposefulness for a long time on the day of his 80th birthday.
