Summer is a time of bright colors, long days, and... heat. It's the heat that dictates the rules for flower gifts. Roses, peonies, daisies, which look great in a cool display case, can wilt in an hour in a stuffy car. Therefore, choosing a bouquet in summer is an art of balance between beauty and durability. In this article, we will tell you which flowers are best to give in June, July, and August so that they bring joy for days, not minutes.
Carnations are often unjustly considered "Soviet" or "funeral." But modern varieties amaze with their diversity: ruffled, fringed, bicolor. The main advantage of carnations is their incredible longevity. They can last up to 2-3 weeks in a vase without special substances. Even in the heat, carnations do not wilt but only slightly open their buds. The aroma of some varieties (such as "Double de Luxe") resembles cloves. Carnations are given to teachers, colleagues, the elderly, as well as loved ones who prefer practicality. But avoid dark red carnations in a romantic bouquet — they are associated with revolution.
Daisies resemble colorful daisies — yellow, orange, pink, red. Their stems are thick, the flowers are large (up to 12 cm). Daisies do not like drafts, but they tolerate heat moderately. A cut daisy lasts 7-10 days. The main problem: the stems can bend under the weight of the flower head. To avoid this, florists use special wire. Daisies are given to children, young girls, friends. They symbolize joy and carefree. In the heat, it is better to choose daisies with tight petals and no damage.
Lilies are one of the most hardy summer flowers. Their large buds open gradually, and each flower lives for 3-5 days, while the entire stem lasts up to 2 weeks. Eastern hybrids have a strong, even oppressive aroma that can cause a headache in the heat. Therefore, for hot rooms, it is better to choose Asian hybrids (weak smell) or Longiflorum lilies (delicate). Lilies need to remove the stamens to prevent pollen from staining clothes. Lilies are given to women, especially on birthdays and anniversaries. White lilies symbolize purity, pink — youth. Avoid giving lilies to allergy sufferers.
Alstroemeria (Peruvian lily) resembles a mini-lily but without scent. It has thin stems, many buds on one stem (up to 20). In a vase, it lasts 10-14 days, even in the heat. Alstroemerias are not capricious and do not require special care. The color is diverse: white, pink, yellow, purple with spots. They symbolize friendship, wealth, and luck. Alstroemerias are given to colleagues, friends, as a "bouquet without obligations." Alstroemerias go well with roses and chrysanthemums. The only drawback is that they can cause allergies in some people (rarely).
Although the peak of chrysanthemums falls in autumn, summer varieties (such as multiflora) also bloom. Chrysanthemums are very durable: they last 2-3 weeks in water. They are not afraid of the heat, but they do not like direct sunlight (the petals burn). Chrysanthemums have a light bitter smell. They symbolize longevity and fidelity. In Europe, chrysanthemums are often given on All Saints' Day, but in Russia — on birthdays as well. In summer, it is better to choose small-flowered varieties (bush chrysanthemums), which look festive and do not fall off for a long time.
In summer, bouquets of wildflowers are popular: forget-me-nots, daisies, bells, delphinium, lupine. They are delicate but do not last long (3-4 days), especially in the heat. The exception is statice (kerchief), which lasts a week fresh and for years dried. Statice comes in blue, white, and yellow. It is often added to summer compositions as a filler. Also, eustoma (lily of the valley) lasts a long time — it resembles a rose but is more durable (10-12 days).
Tulips (it's too late in June, they wilt quickly in the heat). Hyacinths and narcissi (their season is spring). Peonies (although they are beautiful, they last a maximum of 3 days in the heat if cut not in the bud stage). Orchids in bouquets (capricious, wilt quickly). Roses with thin petals (such as tea rose) may burn. It is better to choose roses with tight petals (red, burgundy).
Remove the lower leaves. Cut the stems at an angle (better underwater). Place in a clean vase with cold water (not ice cold!). Do not place in the sun, near a radiator, or an air conditioner. Spray with a spray bottle (except marigolds and daisies). Change the water every day, add special substances (chrysalis) or an aspirin tablet. Remove wilted flowers.
Summer is not a reason to give up on flowers. Just choose durable, bright, sunny ones. Carnations, daisies, alstroemerias, chrysanthemums, lilies will bring joy and will not wilt in an hour. And if you want to surprise someone — add statice or eustoma. And don't forget about the love and care with which you give the bouquet.
