African Women in Europe: Voices, Lives, Breakthroughs

They came to Europe as migrants, refugees, students, artists. They faced racism, language barriers, misunderstanding, and loneliness. But they did not give up. They created networks, started businesses, became mayors, writers, artists, technologists, and inspired whole generations. African women in Europe are not just migration statistics. Their achievements are scattered across different countries, but they come together to form a single picture: Europe is becoming different because of them.

United Kingdom: Literary Peaks and Political Breakthroughs

The United Kingdom has become home to many outstanding African women. Bernardine Evaristo, a British writer of Nigerian-English origin, entered history as the first black woman to win the Booker Prize for her novel \"Girl, Woman, Other\" in 2019. In 2025, she was awarded the Women's Prize Outstanding Contribution Award for \"transformational impact on literature.\" Her work explores the African diaspora, history, and modernity, opening new horizons for British literature.

In politics, a breakthrough was made by Alice Muthalipo-Kouls, who became the first black woman mayor of Reading in Berkshire. Her journey from humble beginnings in Zimbabwe to the highest civil post in a British city is a story of how perseverance and self-belief can overcome any barriers. She first won a seat on the city council, then became deputy mayor, and finally entered history as the first black woman to hold this post.

In the fashion industry, Grace Wales Bonner, born in London to a British mother and a Jamaican father, became the first black woman to be creative director of the men's line of a major European luxury house, Hermès. Her design combines European tailoring with the aesthetics of the African diaspora. She received the LVMH Prize in 2016 and was awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022.

Flavilla Fongang, born into a Cameroonian family and raised in Paris, moved to London over 20 years ago, not knowing English. Today, she is a influential voice in the technology industry, the founder of GTA Black Women in Tech — the largest European network for black women in IT. Her organization has helped one participant become the first black woman to be a managing director of technology at Goldman Sachs.

France: Josephine Baker and Eternity in the Panthéon

France has become the stage for one of the brightest stars of the 20th century — Josephine Baker. An African American who fled racial segregation in the United States and found freedom in Paris, she became the first black woman to be honored with a place in the Panthéon — the mausoleum of great people of France. She was not only a dancer and singer but also a participant in the French Resistance during World War II, spied for Charles de Gaulle, and fought for civil rights alongside Martin Luther King. President Emmanuel Macron called her \"the embodiment of the values of the French Republic of Enlightenment.\" She took French citizenship in 1937 and adopted 12 children of different ethnic groups, creating a \"rainbow\" family.

France has also become home to many African entrepreneurs. In 2023, four African entrepreneurs received awards from Queen Mathilde in Brussels as part of the Prix Awa program.

Germany: Community, Books, and Cultural Mediation

Germany has become a place where African women have created powerful support networks. Joy Wanjiru Machugu-Zenzi, born in Kenya and living in Germany, founded the organization African Women in Europe (AWE) in 2008. Today, AWE unites nearly 10,000 women across Europe. The organization conducts events from Madrid to Geneva, recognizes the achievements of African women in business and leadership through its awards and publishes books where each chapter is written by a woman who shared her story of success. As Zenzi herself says: \"I did not want to lose myself due to difficulties. I wanted to prove to myself that I could achieve more.\"

Diane Koudou, a Ghanaian actress, model, author, and philanthropist, spent 34 years in Germany, where she built a brilliant international career. In 2001, she became the first black woman to win the Miss Schleswig-Holstein beauty contest. She appeared in German television series and Hollywood films, worked with designers such as Thierry Mugler and Versace. In 2005, she was recognized as the honorary cultural ambassador of the African continent in Germany. She founded her own publishing house, Gratitude Verlag, which became the first in Germany to be founded by a black woman — and wrote books, including \"My Black Skin: Black. Successful. German.\"

Belgium: Art as Resistance and Healing

In Belgium, artist Everlyn Nicodemus, born in Tanzania in 1954, after decades of anonymity, gained international recognition. Her retrospective exhibition \"Black Bird\" at the Brussels center Wiels was a triumphant return after nearly two decades of absence. Nicodemus turned her experiences of racism, trauma, and oppression into poetic images. She acknowledges: \"I am also a historian of art, and I am well aware that women artists are often valued only after their death, and for black women this is even more true. I feel happy that recognition came while I am still here. This also shows that the world of art is changing: the door is no longer completely closed.\"

In 2023, four African entrepreneurs received awards from Queen Mathilde in Brussels.

Spain: The Forgotten History of African Women

Spain holds a little-known history of African women who have lived in Europe since the 1870s. The book \"African Women's Histories in European Narratives\" tells about the Krio Fernandino community and their women who overcame racial and gender barriers in colonial Africa and in Spain. Amelia Barclay de Vivar (about 1860–1920) is one of the most prominent figures of this community. These women were wealthy, elegantly dressed, spoke several languages, and had refined tastes. Their history refutes the stereotypes that African women in Europe were only maids or objects of exploitation. This heritage needs to be preserved for future generations.

Italy and Switzerland: Taste, Culture, and Entrepreneurship

In Italy and Switzerland, African women have also left their mark. The AWE organization has conducted events in these countries, immersing themselves in local culture: in Italy, they ate Italian food, in Spain, they danced flamenco. This symbolizes an approach that combines preserving African identity with integration into European culture.

In Switzerland, Joy Machugu-Zenzi worked in the pharmaceutical and banking industries, and in Germany, she created a platform that supports African women in business and trade.

Common Heritage: Networks, Books, and Inspiration

What unites European women of African origin? They have not only achieved personal success. They have created structures that help others. African Women in Europe (AWE) has become not just an online community but a full-fledged organization with award programs and publishing projects. The AWE books are not just collections of stories but guides for those who are just beginning their journey in Europe.

Flavilla Fongang in the United Kingdom created the largest European network for black women in technology. Diane Koudou founded a publishing house in Germany. These women have not just integrated into European societies — they have changed them, making them more diverse and inclusive.

Their stories remind us that the achievements of African women in Europe are not exceptions but a norm. They are part of a long history that began in the 19th century with the women of Krio Fernandino and continues today. Their voices are heard in literature, politics, art, technology, and business. And they prove that when women support each other, they can overcome any barriers.
