The question of Israel's potential military impact on Egypt's water resources is hypothetical and highly speculative, however, it is frequently discussed in the context of regional security and the struggle for water resources. Analyzing possible scenarios, despite their low probability, allows us to understand the vulnerabilities of infrastructure and the degree of interdependence between countries in the region. It should be emphasized that relations between Israel and Egypt are currently peaceful and governed by a peace treaty, making any military action extremely unlikely.
Water in the Middle East has always been a strategic resource. For Egypt, the Nile River is the main source of water, providing over ninety percent of the country's needs. Egypt traditionally considers any actions threatening its water supply as a threat to national security. Israel, in turn, also faces water scarcity and actively invests in desalination and wastewater treatment technologies. Hypothetically, military methods could include both direct attacks on hydrological facilities and indirect actions aimed at blocking or polluting water sources.
The most obvious military method is to strike hydrological facilities on Egyptian territory. This could involve destroying dams and levees on the Nile, destroying pumping stations and irrigation canal systems. Such actions could lead to catastrophic drops in river water levels, disruption of agricultural land, and massive shortages of drinking water. However, even hypothetically, such a scenario is unlikely due to the massive humanitarian consequences and international condemnation. Moreover, modern air defense systems make such strikes difficult to implement.
Another, more complex scenario, involves affecting Egypt's water resources indirectly — by striking the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Blue Nile. Ethiopia, which is building this dam, has long been at the center of a water conflict with Egypt and Sudan. Hypothetically, Israel, with close ties to Ethiopia, could use this influence or even strike the dam to limit water flow into the Nile. The destruction of the dam would lead to an immediate release of a huge volume of water, which could cause catastrophic flooding in Sudan and Egypt on the one hand, and subsequent prolonged decreases in flow and disruptions in water supply on the other. However, such a scenario would be an act of war against Ethiopia and would have massive international consequences.
A more concealed but no less destructive method is the contamination of Nile water with biological or chemical agents. This could render the water unsuitable for drinking and agricultural use for a prolonged period. Such actions are difficult to trace and prove, but they constitute a war crime and can be regarded as an act of aggression against the entire population of Egypt. This scenario also poses a high risk to Israel itself, as the spread of contamination could affect its water resources.
Theoretically, a scenario is possible where Israel, acting through its allies or proxy forces, attempts to block or divert some of the Nile's inflows located on the territory of other states (e.g., in Sudan or South Sudan). This could be achieved through the construction of small dams or altering river beds. However, this method is extremely complex logistically and requires a long time to implement. Moreover, it would be quickly detected and prevented by the international community.
In the modern world, military methods go beyond physical impact. Cyberattacks on Egypt's water supply management systems could disrupt the operation of pumping stations, open locks on dams, or manipulate water quality data. Such actions could lead to technological disasters or interruptions in water supply. Cyberwarfare is less risky in terms of direct confrontation but requires a high level of technical training and intelligence information.
It should be emphasized that all the described scenarios are hypothetical and unlikely. Israel and Egypt maintain peaceful relations, and international law strictly prohibits any actions aimed at denying civilian populations access to water. Moreover, Egypt has a powerful army and allied relations with several countries, making any direct aggression extremely dangerous for Israel. Thus, the issue of military denial of water to Egypt remains more of an academic discussion than a real political practice.
