Saint Simeon: Madness That Was Wisdom

Simeon lived in the 6th century in the Syrian city of Edessa. He was one of those called \"Fools for Christ.\" They were not mad in the medical sense. They voluntarily renounced norms and customs to break human pride and show that what the world often calls madness is actually the only path to God. He spent years in seclusion, eating only bread and water, dedicating days and nights to prayer. He did not perform any unusual deeds, did not attract attention. But his inner life was so intense that even through closed walls he became a source of wisdom for many who sought his advice.

John taught that the real struggle takes place not with external enemies, but with oneself. Anger, pride, melancholy — these are the true demons that need to be fought. His path is a path of purification, where every word is weighed, every glance is controlled. In a world surrounded by endless noise, John reminds us: sometimes the most important thing is to be silent. To hear the silence. And in this silence to meet God.

Simeon and John seem to be opposites: one is a public eccentric, the other is a hidden ascetic. But in fact, they are two ends of the same stick. Both renounced worldly standards, both sought God not through external service, but through internal transformation. Both knew that the main enemy of man is himself, his attachments, his ego, his fear of not being accepted. Simeon destroyed this fear through humiliation, John — through seclusion. But both achieved one thing: they became free.

Their memory is a reminder that there are many paths to God. And that each must choose his own, the one that corresponds to his inner nature. One cannot copy another's heroism, one can only find one's own. Simeon and John are examples, not templates. They tell us: do not be afraid to be inconvenient, do not be afraid to be silent, the main thing is to be faithful to what is inside you.

What Their Memory Can Give Us Today

In the era of digital noise, when each of us receives thousands of messages daily, when our lives become a public spectacle, Simeon and John remind us of the main thing. First of all, of the need for inner honesty. It is easier to be a saint in the eyes of others than to be yourself. Simeon destroyed this stereotype by choosing foolishness over hypocritical righteousness. He showed that what matters is not the outside, if inside there is a lie.

Secondly, of the value of silence. John teaches us that it is not necessary to be loud to be heard. Silence is a space where we can meet ourselves and God. Without silence, our life turns into a roundabout. That is why the day of remembrance of these saints is a call to slow down, take a break, and ask ourselves: \"Who am I? Where am I going? Why?\".

Thirdly, they teach us not to be afraid of non-standardness. Simeon was a fool, John was a hermit. Both were \"not of this world.\" But it is this otherness that made them saints. We often fear to stand out, fear that we will not be understood. Their life is proof that being different from everyone else is sometimes the only way to be true.

Saints Simeon and John are not just names in the church calendar. They are living testimonies that a person can be free even in the most unfree situation. And that at the end of this path is not emptiness, but fullness that cannot be bought or earned, but only acquired through faith and love.
