South America and Africa are two continents that were once one. Millions of years ago, they were part of the supercontinent Gondwana, and their animal and plant worlds developed together. But when tectonic plates drifted apart, evolution on each continent took its own path. Today, we see two completely different but equally astonishing worlds: the wet jungles of the Amazon and the African savannas, sloths and giraffes, capybaras and hippos. How did two continents with a shared past become so different? And what unites them?
Approximately 180 million years ago, South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, and India made up the single supercontinent Gondwana. Dinosaurs roamed this vast land, and plants were represented by conifers, ferns, and the first flowering plants. The climate was warm and humid, and life flourished. However, around 140 million years ago, Gondwana began to break apart. Antarctica separated first, followed by Australia. South America and Africa drifted apart about 100 million years ago. From that moment on, their evolutionary paths diverged forever.
After the breakup, South America remained an isolated island-continent until about 3 million years ago, when it connected with North America through the Isthmus of Panama. This prolonged isolation led to the development of unique species that no longer exist anywhere else. In Africa, on the other hand, the connection with Eurasia remained, and animals migrated freely between continents. Therefore, the African fauna is more \"cosmopolitan\" and includes many representatives that also occur in Europe and Asia. It was the isolation of South America that made it an evolutionary \"incubator\" for unusual creatures.
Africa is a continent where evolution has created some of the most impressive herbivores and predators on the planet. Here, giraffes appeared — amazing animals with long necks that allowed them to reach leaves on tall trees. Here also reside hippos, elephants, rhinoceroses, and zebras. The savanna with its open spaces promoted the development of speed and endurance. African antelopes (gazelles, impalas, kudus) can reach speeds of up to 80-90 km/h, which is necessary for escaping from predators: lions, leopards, cheetahs. The cheetah, the fastest land animal in the world, also appeared in Africa.
But Africa is not just savannas. In its tropical forests, gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos — our closest relatives — reside. It is here, in Eastern Africa, that paleoanthropologists believe the first humans appeared. Evolution on the African continent has been continuous and rich in forms.
South America has given the world completely different heroes. Here, there are no elephants, giraffes, or lions. Instead, there are capybaras — the largest rodents in the world, armadillos, sloths, jaguars, and anacondas. South America retains megafauna that could not compete with northern species after connecting with North America. For example, giant sloths and saber-toothed cats that lived here during the Pleistocene have become extinct, but their smaller relatives (sloths and armadillos) have survived.
The main feature of the South American fauna is its isolation from other continents, which allowed it to evolve in a \"vacuum.\" Unique groups such as the order of the edentates (sloths, armadillos), platyrrhines (unlike African narines), and an enormous diversity of rodents emerged here. Also, in the Amazon, there are numerous species of parrots, hummingbirds, as well as reptiles, including caimans and pythons.
The plant life of the two continents is as diverse as the animal life. In South America, the largest tropical forests in the world are located — the Amazon. This is a true \"oxygen factory\" and a home to an incredible number of plant species: from giant trees to orchids, lianas, and bromeliads. Many of them are endemic — that is, they are found only here. For example, the Brazilian rubber tree is the source of natural rubber. And the famous Victoria amazonica — a water lily with leaves reaching two meters in diameter.
In Africa, however, the flora is more diverse: from the wet tropical forests of the Congo Basin to dry savannas and deserts. Here, baobabs — some of the oldest trees on the planet, capable of living for up to 3000 years — grow. In Eastern Africa, there is a savanna with its characteristic acacias, which have become the symbol of the African landscape. Africa is also rich in endemic species, such as welwitschia — a plant that can live for up to 2000 years in the Namib Desert.
Despite all the differences, South America and Africa have common features. Firstly, the presence of tropical forests and savannas. Secondly, both continents are \"hotspots\" of biodiversity. Thirdly, they have preserved species that have long become extinct in other parts of the world. For example, crocodiles and certain species of monkeys (capuchins in South America and monkeys in Africa) reside in both continents. Also, on both continents, there are representatives of the Felidae family — jaguars and leopards. Although they belong to different genera, their role in the ecosystem is similar.
But the main similarity is history. Both continents have experienced colonization, the slave trade, and the struggle for independence. This has left its mark not only on culture but also on nature: the destruction of forests, hunting of animals, and changes in the landscape. Now both continents are facing the challenge of preserving biodiversity.
The evolution of the animal and plant kingdoms of South America and Africa is a story of how geology shapes biology. One common ancestor gave rise to two completely different worlds because they were separated by ocean and time. South America became a laboratory for creating amazing creatures that no longer exist anywhere else, while Africa became the home of savanna giants and our closest relatives. But nature does not divide continents into \"best\" and \"worst.\" It simply creates diversity that we must cherish.
Today, South America and Africa are two centers of biodiversity that need protection. The Amazon and the Congo Basin are the lungs of the planet. Savannas are habitats for thousands of species, many of which are threatened with extinction. The future of these continents depends on whether we can preserve their unique nature.
