The journey from the modern toy terrier, trembling in the arms of its owner, to the grey wolf, prowling through the forest, is a journey through thousands of years and tens of thousands of generations. The modern Russian toy and the wolf are not just distant relatives, but direct descendants of the same ancient ancestors, whose history spans tens of thousands of years.

The Beginning of the Journey: Common Ancestor and Domestication

Genetic research confirms that the only wild ancestor of all domestic dogs, including the Russian toy, is the wolf. The process of their divergence began in the late Pleistocene, about 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. According to one version, dogs originated from an extinct population of Pleistocene wolves that are not direct ancestors of modern grey wolves. Scientists have also found evidence that at least 2 different populations of ancient wolves were involved in the formation of dogs - the eastern and the western.

The process of domestication was most likely two-stage: first, wolves themselves began to approach human settlements in search of food, so-called self-domestication, and then humans began to selectively breed more friendly individuals.

The Birth of the Breed: From the English Terrier to the Russian Toy

The history of the Russian toy itself begins in the early 20th century. At that time, in Russia, the English toy terrier was very popular - a small smooth-coated dog used for catching rats and as a companion.

However, after the revolution, from 1920 to 1950, breeding purebred toy terriers in Russia practically ceased, and their population was reduced to a critical level. Since the mid-1950s, Soviet cynologists began working on the revival of the breed, but almost all the surviving dogs were without pedigrees and were not always purebred.

A key moment in the history of the breed occurred on October 12, 1958. In Moscow, from two smooth-coated toy terriers, a male puppy was born with unusual elongated ear and leg tufts. This was the result of a spontaneous mutation, but it was so striking that it was decided to fix this trait. This puppy was bred with a bitch who also had slightly elongated fur, and thus the long-haired variety of the breed was obtained.

A significant role in the creation of this variety was played by the Moscow cynologist Yevgenia Fomichna Zhavorova. As a result of many years of selection in isolated conditions, a new breed was bred - the Russian toy, which has two varieties: smooth-coated and long-haired.

What Remains of the Wolf in the Toy Terrier

Despite the external differences, the Russian toy has inherited several important traits from its wild ancestor.

  1. Terrier instincts. Despite their minuteness, toy terriers have retained hunting instincts - they can boldly protect their owner's property from mice, and sometimes even from larger animals.
  2. Group behavior. Like wolves, toys are strongly attached to their pack - their family, where they live. They can be jealous of other pets and have a hard time being apart from their owner.
  3. Social structure. In the wild, wolves live in hierarchical packs. Domestic toys also establish a hierarchy in the family, although their size and charming appearance often make their owners forget about this.

Conclusion

Thus, the modern Russian toy terrier is the result of artificial selection aimed at miniaturization and decorative qualities. But its genetic connection with the wolf remains unbroken: it is the same species, only having passed the path from a wild predator to a domestic companion over tens of thousands of years.
