The Berlin Zoo: Oldest and Most Diverse in the World

If you ask any Berliner where to go in the German capital, they will most likely mention the Berlin Zoo. And they are right. Zoologischer Garten Berlin is not just a zoo, but a true legend that has survived wars, destruction, and rebirth. It is older than many world powers and houses more species of animals than any other zoo on the planet. There are no fences, no feeling of confinement, but a wonderful world where humans come as guests to those who live by their ancient laws. This zoo is a symbol of Berlin, its pride, and one of the most visited places in Europe.

The Birth of a Legend: Germany's Oldest Zoo

The history of the Berlin Zoo began on August 1, 1844, when it opened as the first zoo in Germany and the ninth in the world. Its founder was Professor of Zoology at the University of Berlin, Martin Heinrich Rathenau, and the idea was supported by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, who transferred his pheasantry in the Tiergarten park and several animals from his personal menagerie to the zoo. Since then, the zoo has been a stock corporation - the federal state of Berlin owns only one of the four thousand shares, the rest are in private hands.

In 1869, Heinrich Bodinus became the director, initiating the construction of unique \"exotic\" pavilions. And in 1913, a huge aquarium was opened, which for a long time was the largest in the world. By the beginning of World War II, there were about 4,000 animals in the zoo. However, the war was a catastrophe for it: almost all buildings were destroyed, and only 91 of the 4,000 pets survived. But the zoo was reborn from ruins, and today it is considered one of the largest and most diverse in Europe.

Richness of Species: The Largest Collection in the World

The main uniqueness of the Berlin Zoo is its incredible diversity. Here, about 20,000 animals representing more than 1,200 to 1,500 species live. Thanks to this diversity, it is recognized as the most diverse zoo in the world. Here you can see everything: from tiny ants to giant elephants, from rare white rhinos to lemurs and orangutans.

Among the jewels of the collection are giant pandas, which have become real stars. In 2017, with great fanfare, in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Xi Jinping of the PRC, pandas Jiao Qing and Man Man settled in the zoo. They gave the zoo the first panda twins in Germany in 2019. Also living here are famous elephants, giraffes, gorillas, and many other animals.

Architecture and Enclosures: A World Without Bars

The main principle of the Berlin Zoo is to show animals in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat. Cells are rare here. As early as the 1930s, fences began to be replaced by ravines and spacious open enclosures with natural stone. Today, this philosophy is continued: ponds with rocks and resting places are created for penguins and sea otters, a beach with artificial waves for sea birds, and a special room in almost complete darkness for nocturnal animals.

The entrance to the zoo itself is a sightseeing attraction. The famous Elephant Gate (Elefantentor) at the main entrance is a symbol of Zoologischer Garten Berlin, designed at the end of the 19th century. Unique buildings are located on the territory of the zoo, such as the Alfred Brehm House - one of the largest zoological pavilions in the world, as well as the Panda Pavilion, the Rhinoceros Pagoda, and the Antelope House. On three floors of the aquarium, not only fish are presented, but also reptiles, amphibians, insects, and invertebrates.

Famous Residents: From Knut to Bobby

The Berlin Zoo has become home to many animal celebrities. The zoo experienced a real boom in popularity in 2006 when the white bear cub Knut was born. He became a worldwide sensation, the symbol of the zoo, and the favorite of the public. Among other legends are the gorilla Bobby, who is still remembered, and the hippopotamus Knutschke, who survived the war and lived for 45 years - a monument was even erected in his honor.

21st Century Concept: Science, Conservation, and Education

Today, the Berlin Zoo is not just a place for walks. It actively participates in programs for the conservation of rare species. Since the 1970s, it has been breeding black rhinos and Przewalski's horses. In 1923, it was in the Berlin Zoo that the first in the world stud book for the wisent was created. In 2024, the zoo announced the construction of a new Monkey House, which will be as close as possible to the natural habitat of gorillas.

The zoo also focuses on sustainable development, species conservation, and education. Every year, more than 3.5 million people visit it, making it the most visited zoo in Germany and one of the most popular in Europe.

Why the Berlin Zoo is Unique

The Berlin Zoo is unique in its combination of history, scale, and philosophy. It is the oldest zoo in Germany, having survived wars and destruction but preserving its soul. It is the most diverse in the world. It is a place where there are no bars, and animals live in spacious enclosures close to nature. It is home to legendary animals such as Knut and pandas. And it is a center of science and conservation that not only shows animals but also helps them survive.

When you walk along the paths of the Berlin Zoo, you do not feel like you are in captivity. You feel like a guest in a vast, living world where every corner is thought out to the smallest detail. And perhaps that is why tourists come from all over the world - to see not just animals, but an entire universe that lives by its own laws but generously opens its doors to humans.
