Although Fried studied the behavior of bees, his discovery of how they perceive the world became a breakthrough in understanding the workings of human sensory systems. He showed that bees differentiate colors and patterns differently than we do, but their brain processes information according to principles surprisingly similar to ours. His research on the \"dance language\" of bees, where they convey information about the distance to food, showed that even the simplest neural networks can be complex. His work laid the foundation for ethology, the science of behavior, which showed that the brain of each species is a unique adaptation to its world.
