Kazakhs and Belarusians are two distinct peoples with rich history and culture. Despite both peoples living in the post-Soviet space, there are many differences between them, due to geographical location, historical development, religious and cultural traditions. Let's consider the main distinctions.

Language

The Kazakh language belongs to the Turkic language group, it is close to the Kyrgyz, Karakalpak and Bashkir languages. The writing system uses Cyrillic (a transition to Latin is underway in Kazakhstan). The Belarusian language belongs to the East Slavic group, it is most closely related to Polish and Ukrainian languages and uses Cyrillic.

Culture

Kazakh culture was formed under the influence of a nomadic way of life. The traditional dwelling is a yurt, which is easy to assemble and disassemble. Livestock breeding and camel breeding play an important role. Belarusian culture was formed in conditions of settled agriculture and a forest zone. The traditional dwelling is a wooden house with a straw roof. Belarusians are known for their folk crafts: weaving, pottery, straw and willow weaving.

Religion

The majority of Kazakhs follow Sunni Islam of the Hanafi school. Islam came to the Kazakh steppes in the 10th-12th centuries and had a huge impact on the culture and way of life of the people. Belarusians predominantly follow Orthodoxy (Belarusian Orthodox Church), a significant part are Catholics (mainly in western and central regions). Protestant communities and Judaism are also represented.

Traditions

Kazakh traditions are closely connected with a nomadic way of life: the Nauryz festival, aitys (a poetic contest), baiqa (horse races), training in falconry. Belarusian traditions are connected with agriculture and forest culture: the Kupala festival (Ivan Kupala), Dohzhinki, Maslenitsa (Maslenitsa), rituals associated with sowing and harvest.

Cuisine

Kazakh cuisine is based on meat (horse meat, lamb, beef) and dairy products. Main dishes: beshbarmak, kumys, shubat, kazy, bauyrskaki. Belarusian cuisine is rich in potatoes, mushrooms, berries, flour dishes. Popular dishes: draniki, borscht, okroshka, koloduny, machanka, lard.

Mentality

Kazakhs are known for their hospitality, which has deep roots in nomadic culture (any traveler was always welcomed in the yurt). They value collectivism, respect for the elderly, and family ties. Belarusians are known as a calm, patient, and hardworking people. They are called \"zhivim po dushe\" to emphasize moderation and warmth. Belarusians are more reserved in expressing emotions, but very friendly.

Climate and nature

Kazakhstan is primarily steppes, semi-deserts, and deserts with a sharply continental climate (cold winter and hot summer). Belarus is forests, fields, rivers, and lakes with a temperate climate, mild winter, and warm summer. The nature of Belarus is significantly greener and wetter.

Historical heritage

Kazakhs trace their history back to Turkic nomadic tribes, the Golden Horde, and the Kazakh Khanate. Their history is connected with the Great Steppe and nomadic empires. Belarusians are the descendants of East Slavic tribes (Kривичи, дреговичи, радимичи). Their history is closely linked to the Polotsk and Turovsky principalities, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Family structure

Patriarchal order is preserved in Kazakh culture, respect for the elderly is of particular importance. Children are raised strictly and in accordance with traditions. In Belarus, the family is also an important value, but family relationships are more democratic, women play a more active role in public life.

National character

Kazakhs are more temperamental and emotional, inclined to active communication and gesturing. Belarusians are more reserved, calm, and reasonable. They are called \"paleshuki\" for their connection with the forest and nature.
