Bladed weapons are those designed for inflicting damage on a target by means of the physical strength of a person in direct contact with the target object. Not every knife or object resembling a weapon is classified as bladed weapons. There is a set of mandatory characteristics that are evaluated collectively.

If at least one criterion is not met, the item is not recognized as a bladed weapon. Let's consider the main characteristics in more detail.

Key Criteria for Classifying as Bladed Weapons

Experts identify three key components that allow an object to be classified as a bladed weapon.

Intended use. The object is constructively designed to cause harm that is dangerous to the life and health of a person or animal. This is the main criterion: if an object has a direct household or domestic purpose (kitchen knife, garden tool), it is not considered a weapon.

Method of operation. Damage is caused by the physical strength of a person without the use of gunpowder, explosives, or mechanisms.

Direct contact. The impact on the target occurs through direct contact with the target object.

Structural Characteristics of Categorized Bladed Weapons

For bladed weapons (knives, daggers, bayonets), determining structural characteristics are highlighted.

Characteristic Description
Blade Presence of a combat part with a point and blade (or blades)
Hilt Part for holding and controlling the weapon with the hand
Strength of connection The blade is firmly and immovably connected to the hilt
Point The end of the combat part, tapering to a point or edge
Edge The sharpened edge of the combat part with a sharp angle
Limiter The front expanded part of the hilt (not always required)

Key Dimensional and Technical Criteria

In addition to structural features, there are specific technical parameters. For knives classified as bladed weapons, they are as follows.

Parameter Value
Blade length Not less than 90 mm (for some types, 70 mm is allowed)
Back thickness More than 2.6 mm
Blade hardness Not less than 42 HRC
Point angle Less than 70 degrees
Hilt length More than 70 mm

Important: these parameters are considered collectively. For example, if the blade has a thickness of 2.4 mm, the item will no longer be considered a bladed weapon, even if the other parameters correspond.

Handgrip Safety

This is a separate and very important criterion. The handle of a bladed weapon must provide secure holding and prevent the hand from slipping on the blade during impact.

Experts conduct an experiment to test this characteristic: 20-30 strikes are made on a dry pine board. If the hand slips or the handle breaks, the item is not recognized as a bladed weapon.

For example, kitchen knives often do not have a limiter and palm grooves, making them unsafe for strong strikes.

Characteristics of Non-Bladed (Blunt Force Trauma) Weapons

For items such as nunchaku, clubs, clubs, and the like, different criteria apply.

Characteristic Description
Striking part A solid body with mass and size for reliable damage
Strength of construction Ability to withstand strikes without destruction
Hilt or pendant An element for holding or attaching to the hand
Openings for fingers Characteristic for nunchaku
Significant weight To ensure damage-causing action

For blunt force trauma weapons, the mass of the striking element is also important. For example, for a baton, it should be at least 10 grams.

What Is Not Bladed Weapons

Items certified as household, domestic, and industrial goods are not considered bladed weapons. This includes kitchen, pocket, shoe, garden knives, as well as sports equipment and souvenirs.

However, in practice, there are cases where an item is sold as \"household\" but by its characteristics is classified as a bladed weapon. For example, knives purchased from Chinese websites with the label \"not a bladed weapon\" are recognized as bladed weapons after examination.

A machete, despite its imposing appearance, is often not considered a bladed weapon because it is made of soft metal and intended for cutting bamboo.

How Experts Determine Bladed Weapons

Bladed weapon expertise is a comprehensive study. The expert does not just measure parameters but also conducts experiments.

Stage Action
Visual inspection Study of shape, structure, and method of manufacture
Measurements Length, width, thickness of the blade and handle
Hardness test Using a hardness tester
Strength test Strikes on a board, checking the flexibility of the blade
Comparison with samples Comparison with reference data and GOSTs

Expert research also includes checking the ease of holding and safety of the hand when striking at different angles.

Conclusion

The characteristics of bladed weapons are a combination of structural, dimensional, and technical characteristics. No single characteristic is sufficient on its own. Only a comprehensive assessment allows the expert to draw a conclusion.

Key criteria: intended use for inflicting damage, muscle strength, direct contact, as well as specific parameters of the blade (length, thickness, hardness) and handgrip safety. If any parameter does not match, the item is not recognized as a bladed weapon.
