Twenty-fifth of July. In the Slavic pagan calendar, this date was marked by a special, troubling and at the same time sacred event — the Selection of the Victim for Perun. A week before the main holiday of the Thunderer, on the day when the sky was especially often illuminated by lightning, and the earth trembled from thunder, ancient Slavs decided who or what was destined to become a gift for the most powerful god of the pantheon. This ritual, shrouded in legends and disputes of historians, has passed a long way from bloody sacrifices to symbolic actions, and today, in the era of the revival of interest in original traditions, it acquires a new, deeply symbolic sound.
To understand the meaning of the ritual of the victim selection, it is necessary to realize to whom it was intended. Perun occupied a central place in the pantheon of eastern Slavs. He was not just the god of thunder and lightning, but also the patron of warriors and the princely retinue. Slavs believed that Perun controlled the elements, cast thunderbolts and influenced the outcome of battles. That is why sacrifices to him were brought with special care, hoping for military victories, prosperity and protection from natural calamities.
Symbols of Perun were the oak, the lightning and the sword, embodying power and justice. His sacred animal was the forest bull tur, and the flower was the blue iris, whose six petals resembled the thunderbolt sign. Temples of the Thunderer, built under the open sky, had the shape of this flower: in the center there was a statue of the god, and around it were eternal fires burning in the pits-«petals». In front of the idol was an altar in the form of a stone ring, where the sacrificial blood was poured.
The day of the victim selection, marked on July 25th, was a kind of preparation for the main Perun holiday, which came on August 2nd. This was the moment when the community gathered to determine which offering would be most pleasing to the fierce god.
According to surviving information, the selection was not arbitrary, but through sacred procedures. The main tool was DrawingLots. The priests who led the ceremony used special ritual items to determine the will of the deity. In some traditions, divination was carried out on the «Velесov Sноп» — a special bundle of ears left on the field after the harvest.
The victim chosen in this way received a special, marked with the seal of fate status. This could be an animal or, according to some sources, a person. The ritual itself was shrouded in solemnity and awe, as the correct conduct of it depended on the favor of the fierce god.
Traditionally, animals were offered to Perun. The most pleasing gift was a bull, especially a single-colored one (preferably red or ginger). If it was not possible to bring a bull, it was replaced by a rooster, usually red.
Sacrifice was not just murder, but a complex ritual. The sacrificial blood was spoken over the weapons, the priest anointed the forehead of each warrior with blood, after which they wore red bands. This symbolically linked the warrior to the god, giving him protection and strength in battle.
Besides animals, there were other forms of offerings, called «treb» — «srebro» — money, «brašno» — food and alcoholic drinks. Also, there was a form of «prya» — a ritual duel dedicated to Perun by warriors.
However, the most controversial and dark aspect of this ritual are mentions of human sacrifices. Sources indicate that sometimes captured warriors could be offered as a sacrifice. There is also a legend that Perun chose not just a victim, but a «bride» — a girl who was taken to a place teeming with snakes. Later, this cruel ritual was replaced by a less cruel one — ritual bathing of girls in the river.
It is important to note that many modern historians doubt the widespread practice of human sacrifices among Slavs. There is a hypothesis that these information were deliberately exaggerated or even fabricated in the era of the spread of Christianity to discredit pagan cults and justify the policy of forced baptism.
Today, in the 21st century, the ritual «Selection of the Victim for Perun» is experiencing a revival, but in a completely new, reinterpreted form. It is no longer associated with bloody sacrifices, but has turned into a symbolic act, demonstrating the richness of cultural heritage and respect for the traditions of ancestors.
Modern followers of ancient Slavic traditions (Rodnover) preserve the elements of this ritual, using them as symbols of spiritual purification and rebirth. Instead of animals and people, symbolic objects, bread, grain, honey are offered. The festival itself has a more folkloric and educational character.
Reconstructions of rituals associated with the cult of Perun are carried out within the framework of ethnographic festivals and meetings of pagan communities. For modern people, this day has become an occasion to reflect on the cyclical nature of nature, on the connection between generations and on those spiritual values that our ancestors put into their rituals. This is not a return to archaism, but an attempt to understand ancient wisdom through the lens of modernity, transforming the dark ritual of the selection of a victim into a festival of unity with nature and one's own history.
