Is there life on Mars?

Tue, 13 Oct 2026 21:28:00 +0300

The question of life on Mars has been intriguing humanity for not one century. Today, scientists do not have direct evidence of the existence of living organisms on the Red Planet. However, it is also impossible to completely exclude such a possibility. The answer depends on what one means by the word \"life.\" What We Know About Mars Today Mars is a cold planet with a thin atmosphere. The average temperature is about minus 60 degrees Celsius. The atmosphere is mainly composed of carbon dioxide. Liquid water cannot exist stably on the surface today. However, billions of years ago, Mars was warmer and wetter. There were rivers, lakes, and possibly oceans on the surface. This is confirmed by riverbeds, deltas, and minerals that are formed only in the presence of water. Why Scientists Do Not Exclude Life on Mars Factor Significance for Life Water in the Past Liquid water is a key condition for life as we know it Underground Oceans There may be liquid water under polar caps and deep in the ground Organic Molecules Found in Martian rocks but may have a non-biological origin Methane in the Atmosphere May be released by bacteria or geological processes Radiation High levels on the surface, but protection is higher in the deep ground Where Life Is Sought on Mars Location Why Interesting Crater Lake There was a lake and river delta in the past Underground Oceans Possible liquid water under polar caps Deep Grounds Protection from radiation and possible water reserves Geyzers and Methane Emissions Potential energy sources for microorganisms Ancient Riverbeds Traces of water and sedimentary rocks What Rovers Have Found Rovers have discovered organic molecules ... Is it true that the poorest people in 2100 will live like they do in Switzerland?

Wed, 30 Sep 2026 05:41:00 +0300

No, that is not the case. The assertion that the poorest people in 2100 will live like those in today's Switzerland is an unwarranted simplification and is not confirmed by the models usually cited. What the models actually show The mentioned forecast comes from the Earth4All project's scenario of \"Giant Leap\". However, its results are incorrectly interpreted. The \"Giant Leap\" scenario is not a forecast but a \"what if.\" It is not a prediction of the future but a modeling of what potentially could happen if humanity undertakes five extreme reversals (eradication of poverty, reduction of inequality, expansion of women's rights, transformation of food and energy systems) immediately and simultaneously. It is about average incomes, not living like in Switzerland. The model shows that in this scenario, the average income per capita in the poorest regions could significantly increase. For example, for sub-Saharan Africa, the forecast is that disposable income of workers and GDP per capita will double compared to the \"Too Little, Too Late\" scenario. However, this does not mean reaching the level of Switzerland, but only a significant improvement over the current situation. The default reality is \"Too Little, Too Late.\" If current trends continue, according to the models, poverty in sub-Saharan Africa will increase from 500 million to 900 million people by 2100. In this scenario, there is no mention of a Switzerland level. Scenario comparison Parameter \"Giant Leap\" Scenario \"Too Little, Too Late\" Scenario Conditions Five extreme reversals implemented immediately Current trends continue Poverty in sub-Saharan Africa Significant reduction Growth from 500 million to 900 million people Income per capita Doubling in the poorest regions Stagnation or decline Standard of living Significant imp ... Predictions for the development of humanity by 2100

Tue, 29 Sep 2026 21:14:00 +0300

By 2100, humanity is likely to face a paradoxical situation: demographic decline and aging in some regions will be combined with growth and youth in others, while technology, especially artificial intelligence, will become the main driver of the economy. The key choice is between the scenarios of \"too little, too late\" and \"a giant leap\". Demographics: peak passed, the world is aging According to UN forecasts, the world's population will reach a peak of approximately 10.3 billion around 2084, after which it will slowly decline, reaching about 10.2 billion by 2100. The main reason is the decline in fertility: in more than half of the world's countries, the total fertility rate is below the replacement level (2.1 children per woman). This will lead to a radical change in the population structure. Aging. The number of people over 65 will more than double — from 857 million today to 2.4 billion by 2100. Their share will grow from 10% to 24%. For the first time in history, older adults and young people under 25 will be represented by approximately equal proportions. Leadership change. China, whose population is expected to decline from 1.4 billion to 633 million, will be replaced by India. African countries (Nigeria, DRC, Ethiopia, Tanzania) will become the main drivers of global growth. Migration. To mitigate the effects of aging, developed countries will be forced to either stimulate fertility or actively attract immigrants. Studies show that with a complete halt to immigration, the US share in global GDP could fall from 14.4% to 9.2% by 2100. Technology: artificial intelligence as the foundation of the economy and war By 2100, technology will become an integral part of the economy and security. Projections suggest that artificial intelligence and automation will determine global power. Field Forecast Economy Artificial intell ... Read more

Why do dolphins save people?

Mon, 28 Sep 2026 10:55:00 +0300

Stories about dolphins saving people do indeed exist and are documented, but there is still no definitive scientific explanation for this phenomenon. Scientists propose several versions, which can be divided into two groups: some believe it is an expression of instinct, while others consider it the result of high intelligence and emotional perception. First version: instincts and reflexes This group of theories explains the behavior of dolphins by innate programs rather than a conscious decision to help. Instinct to care for offspring. Dolphins are mammals, and females often push newborn calves to the surface to take their first breath. This pushing reflex could have solidified over time as a universal reaction to any large object that needs to be lifted from the bottom. This is how dolphins sometimes save their sick companions and even other animals. Play and curiosity. Dolphins are very playful. They may perceive a swimming person or boat as an interesting object for play and simply push it like a toy. In some cases, this can accidentally lead a person to the shore, but it can also end up with a dolphin pushing them into open water. Protection of territory. There are cases when dolphins drive sharks away from people, forming a dense circle around them. However, this may not be due to sympathy for humans, but rather because sharks are perceived as competitors or threats to dolphins themselves, especially their offspring. Second version: intelligence and emotions Another group of researchers believes that it is not worth explaining everything solely through reflexes, as the dolphin brain is very complex. Empathy and recognition of emotions. Scientists note that dolphins are capable of recognizing emotions such as fear or panic and can experience something like empathy towards a creature in distress. Conscious help. Some experts insist that dolphins can understand that a person needs help and make a decision to act purposefully. Importa ... Read more

Famous chimpanzee Ai in literature and art

Fri, 25 Sep 2026 08:50:00 +0300

Chimpanzee Ai, who passed away in January 2026, was not a character in literary works or a subject of paintings. However, her life and scientific work left a significant mark on culture through scientific publications, media, and even art. Ai's Creativity as an Artistic Object Ai herself was an artist. In her free time, away from experiments, she loved to draw with markers on paper, and she did so without any food reward — simply for the process. In 2017, to mark the fortieth anniversary of the project, one of her paintings was printed on a silk scarf, which was gifted to the famous primatologist Jane Goodall. This is the only documented case where a work by Ai became part of material culture and was presented to the public. Media and Scientific Literature Ai was a genius in popular press. Her abilities — recognizing over a hundred Chinese characters, the English alphabet, numbers from zero to nine, and eleven colors — made her the hero of many television shows and articles. Research involving her was published in the journal Nature, which in itself is a form of scientific recognition and contribution to the literature on primate behavior. Her work helped create an experimental basis for understanding chimpanzee cognition, which scientists call a foundation for studying the evolution of the human mind. Cultural Context: Chimpanzees and Art Although Ai did not become a character in books or films, the theme of chimpanzees creating art is itself a cultural phenomenon. The exhibition \"Monkey Business\" at the Susan Inglett gallery in 2023 explored the connection between chimpanzee paintings, Jackson Pollock's abstract expressionism, and artificial intelligence. The exhibition featured archival photographs of painting apes and their works, raising questions about what constitutes art and who has the right to create it. Ai, as one of the most famous painting chimpanzees, is part of this broader cultural context, even if her name is not mention ... Read more

Bachelorette party

Tue, 22 Sep 2026 12:06:00 +0300

Bachelor party is a traditional event held before a wedding. It is a celebration for the bride and her closest friends, a kind of farewell to single life and an opportunity to have fun before the big event. Today, bachelor parties can be very different: from quiet evenings at home to noisy parties in clubs or trips. History of the Tradition The roots of the bachelor party go back to ancient times. Among Slavic peoples, there was a ritual called \"bachelor party\" or \"eve of dawn,\" which could last for several days. The bride said goodbye to her friends, to her single freedom, unbraided her hair — a symbol of virginity. Friends sang sad and cheerful songs, wove crowns, made divinations. After the wedding, a woman moved to her husband's family and often lost contact with her previous life, so the bachelor party was an important ritual of transition. In Western tradition, the equivalent of the bachelor party is the \"bachelorette party,\" which became popular in the twentieth century. Unlike the Slavic ritual, here the emphasis is not on saying goodbye to single life, but on celebrating and having fun. Modern Formats Today, a bachelor party is primarily a way to spend time with friends and distract from wedding preparations. Here are some popular formats. Home evening. A cozy evening with wine, pizza, movies, and conversations. Suitable for those who value tranquility and do not want noisy events. Spa day. A visit to a spa salon, massage, manicure, cosmetic procedures. Relaxation and self-care before the wedding. Cooking master class. Joint cooking of dishes, tasting, communication. A popular option for creative groups. Club party. Dancing, cocktails, photo session. A classic option for those who love noise and fun. Trip. A weekend trip to another city, nature, or abroad. More expensive, but a memorable format. Themed party. A costume party in the style of retro, pajama party, Great Gatsby party, and so on. Organization Usually, the organ ... Read more

Pessimists and optimists: who lives longer

Mon, 21 Sep 2026 13:34:00 +0300

According to most large-scale studies, optimists live longer. However, the devil is in the details: the key role is not so much the presence of positive expectations as the absence of pessimism. What do the numbers say Data from long-term observations are quite consistent. Difference in life expectancy: the most famous study showed that the most optimistic women live on average 14 whole nine-tenths percent longer than their pessimistic peers, and men — 10 whole nine-tenths percent longer. The chances of living to eighty-five are 1.5 to seven-tenths times higher for optimists. Mortality: a meta-analysis of fifteen studies involving more than two hundred thousand people confirmed that optimism is associated with a reduced risk of premature death. Other data show that each ten points towards pessimism increases the risk of mortality by nineteen percent. An important nuance: some scientists believe that optimism and pessimism are not two sides of the same scale. Analysis shows that it is high pessimism that predicts an increase in mortality, while optimism itself may not provide additional protection. Why does this happen Optimists more often lead a healthy lifestyle: they move more, eat better, smoke and drink less often. Moreover, they cope more effectively with stress, which has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system. Cultural context Interestingly, not all studies confirm this connection. For example, among elderly Japanese, optimism was not associated with life expectancy. Scientists suggest that in cultures with a different attitude towards positive thinking, this connection may not work. Long-lived optimists: real examples History knows many people whose positive attitude and activity helped them live a long and fulfilling life. Dick Van Dyke (100 years old). Legendary actor, known for his role as Bert in \"Mary Poppins,\" lived to be one hundred. He attributed the secret of longevity to the absence of anger and a calm attitude towards life. He ... How dogs fart: sound, smell, and breed ranking

Thu, 17 Sep 2026 10:02:00 +0300

Dogs fart just like humans — through the anus, releasing gases that form in the digestive tract. However, this process has its own characteristics in dogs, related to their anatomy and diet. Why Do Dogs Fart The main reason is the swallowing of air and fermentation in the intestines. Dogs often eat quickly, swallowing a large amount of air along with their food. This air either comes out through belching or moves further along the digestive tract and exits as gas. The second source is intestinal bacteria. When food is digested, especially food rich in fiber or carbohydrates, bacteria in the large intestine release gases: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. It is these gases that create the characteristic smell and sound. Sound and Smell Anatomically, the process is no different from that in humans. Gases accumulate in the rectum. When the pressure reaches a certain level, the sphincter relaxes, and the gases are released. The sound depends on the speed of gas exit and the tone of the sphincter muscles. Dog farts can be as quiet as they are deafening. The smell is a separate story. Most gases are odorless: nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. The smell is created by sulfur-containing gases, primarily hydrogen sulfide. It is this gas that gives dog farts their characteristic smell of rotten eggs. The more sulfur-containing products (red meat, broccoli, cauliflower) and indigestible proteins are in a dog's diet, the more aromatic the emissions will be. Ranking of the Most Farting Breeds British researchers conducted a survey among dog owners to find out which breeds fart most often and whose farts are the most unpleasant. Top 10 breeds by frequency of farting (more than three times a day): Rottweiler — ninety-five percent (leader in frequency). Greyhound — ninety percent. French Bulldog — eighty-eight percent. English Bulldog — eighty-six percent. Beagle — eighty-four percent. King Charles Spaniel — e ... Read more

Can AI destroy humanity?

Wed, 16 Sep 2026 21:42:00 +0300

The question of whether artificial intelligence can destroy humanity is no longer just a plot in science fiction. Today, it is discussed by leading scientists, developers, and philosophers. There is no definitive answer, but there are several scenarios that are taken seriously. Why is this even possible The main danger is not that AI would suddenly \"want\" to destroy humans. The risk lies elsewhere: a superintelligent system may pursue its goals in ways that seem optimal to it but are catastrophic for humanity. A classic example is the task of \"maximizing the production of paperclips.\" If you give a powerful AI such a goal and do not limit it, it may destroy everything that stands in the way of production, including people. Not out of malice, but because people are a resource that can be used otherwise. The second problem is \"alignment.\" Even if the goal is formulated correctly, AI may interpret it differently from what we intended. The more powerful the system, the harder it is to predict its behavior. Scenarios of destruction Experts identify several main ways in which AI could cause irreparable harm. Autonomous weapons. Systems capable of independently choosing and striking targets may fall out of control or be used by terrorists. Cyber attacks. AI can find vulnerabilities faster than any human and use them to destroy infrastructure, the financial system, or defense networks. Biological weapons. AI can help create pathogens with specified properties, making biological weapons more accessible. Economic collapse. Mass automation may lead to unemployment and social instability unless redistribution mechanisms are in place. Loss of control. Superintelligence may bypass any limitations if they are not deeply enough embedded. What the skeptics say Many researchers believe that the threat is exaggerated. They present several arguments. Firstly, modern AI, even the most advanced, does not possess consciousness, will, or intentions. It does n ... Read more
