On March 19-20, 2013, the University of Cambridge hosted the international symposium "Geopolitics and Geoeconomics of Mongolia's Natural Resources Strategy", organized by the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit (MIASU) with the support of the Embassy of Mongolia in the United Kingdom and the Japanese-Mongolian company JP Mongolian Capital Management Limited (JPMCM) and the British-Australian mining corporation Rio Tinto.
The symposium was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Great Britain and Mongolia in 1963.Great Britain was the first capitalist country to establish diplomatic relations with the Mongolian People's Republic, which was then part of the socialist camp, at the height of the Cold War. Currently, both sides, as a rule, invariably emphasize this fact at every opportunity. This circumstance gave the scientific event additional political significance and helped to increase the level of representation of Mongolia. The delegation, which was headed by a member of the Great State Hural of Mongolia, Chairman of the Mongolian-British parliamentary group, former Prime Minister of Mongolia R. Amarzhargal, included the President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Academician B. Enkhtuvshin, Chairman of the Mongolian Association of Exporters D. Galsandorj, Permanent Representative of the Central Bank of Mongolia in London D. Karimov. Enkhzhargal, Deputy Director of the Institute of International Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia D. Shurkhuu. On the British side, in addition to the organizers and invited scientists, the Chairman of the Mongolian-British Chamber of Commerce, J. R. R. Tolkien, took part. Grogan, Head of Global External Relations at Rio Tinto Corporation R. Kort and others.
The symposium was attended mainly by scientists and individual representatives of government organizations from six countries-Great Britain, Mongolia, Japan, Russia, China and Denmark.
