Russians and Kazakhs are two major peoples living in the post-Soviet space. Despite their millennia-old neighborhood and close historical ties, there are many differences between them, due to different origins, cultural traditions, religion, and way of life. Let's consider the main distinctions.

Origins and Ethnogenesis

Russians belong to the East Slavic group of peoples. Their ancestors are East Slavic tribes — Kривичи, Вятичи, Словене, and others, which formed the Ancient Russian state in the 9th-10th centuries. Kazakhs belong to the Turkic group of peoples. Their ethnogenesis developed on the basis of Turkic and Mongolian tribes inhabiting the territory of modern Kazakhstan since ancient times. The Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate had a great influence.

Language

The Russian language belongs to the East Slavic subgroup of the Indo-European language family. It uses the Cyrillic script. The Kazakh language belongs to the Turkic language group (Kyrgyz subgroup). It is most closely related to the Kyrgyz, Karakalpak, and Bashkir languages. The script uses Cyrillic, but since 2018, there has been a gradual transition to Latin.

Religion

Most Russians adhere to Orthodox Christianity (the Russian Orthodox Church). Orthodoxy was adopted in 988 and had a tremendous impact on the formation of Russian culture, statehood, and mentality. Most Kazakhs adhere to Sunni Islam of the Hanafi madhhab. Islam began to spread in Kazakh steppes in the 10th-12th centuries and became an integral part of Kazakh culture and daily life.

Traditional way of life

Russians have lived a sedentary lifestyle for centuries, engaging in agriculture, animal husbandry, and crafts. Traditional dwellings were wooden izbas with stoves. Kazakhs led a nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyle, engaged in animal husbandry (raised horses, sheep, camels). Traditional dwellings were yurts, which were easily assembled and disassembled, making it convenient for nomadism.

Culture and traditions

Russian culture is rich in calendar holidays (Maslenitsa, Easter, Trinity), folklore, folk crafts (Khokhloma, Gzhel, Matryoshka). Literature, music, and ballet hold an important place. Kazakh culture is imbued with nomadic traditions: the holiday of Nauryz, aitys (contest of akyns), baiqa (horse races), hunting with a golden eagle. Oral folk creativity is highly valued — epics, songs, legends.

Cuisine

Russian cuisine is diverse: soups (borsch, щи, уха), cereals, blinis, pies, dumplings. Vegetables, mushrooms, berries, and fish are widely used. Meat is usually beef, pork, and poultry.

Mentality and national character

Russians are often attributed with a breadth of soul, emotionality, patience, collectivism, and a tendency to introspection. Russian culture is characterized by duality: the combination of sorrow and joy, tragedy and success. Kazakhs are known for their hospitality, which has deep roots in the nomadic tradition (to entertain a traveler was considered a duty). They value respect for the elderly, family ties, tranquility, and prudence. Kazakhs are more reserved and practical than Russians.

Family structure

In Russian families, historically, relationships between spouses were more equal, although the head of the family was often a man. Children are raised in love but with a certain severity. In Kazakh culture, the patriarchal system is maintained more clearly. Elders have unwavering authority. Marriages are often aimed at preserving the clan and traditions.

Climate and nature

The territory of Russia is vast and includes various climatic zones: from Arctic deserts to subtropics. However, the majority of Russians live in temperate and continental climates with cold winters and warm summers. Kazakhstan is predominantly steppe, semi-deserts, and deserts with a sharply continental climate: very cold winter (down to -40°C) and hot summer (up to +40°C).

Attitude to work

Russians are known for their diligence, but sometimes they show passivity and slowness. A communal culture (\"mir\") has formed in history, where mutual assistance is important. Kazakhs are also very hardworking, but their work is historically associated with nomadic animal husbandry, which requires endurance, the ability to quickly adapt, and independence. Kazakhs value practicality and rationality.

Attitude to food

For Russians, there is always plenty of bread, soups, and hot food on the table. Traditional banquets are accompanied by abundant treats and conversations. For Kazakhs, bread is also respected, but meat and dairy products are the foundation of nutrition. It is important to note that Kazakhs do not consume pork due to religious (Islamic) norms.
