VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which means a virtual private network. In simple terms, VPN creates a secure channel between your device and the internet. All traffic goes through an intermediary server in an encrypted form.
The main idea is that your internet service provider and third-party observers only see an encrypted stream of data. They do not know which sites you visit and what data you send.
When you connect to a VPN, your device establishes a connection with the VPN server. This server can be located in another country or city.
Next, all your traffic passes through this server. Websites and services see not your real IP address, but the IP address of the VPN server. Therefore, the feeling is created that you are in another part of the world.
At the same time, data is encrypted. Even if someone intercepts the packets, they will not be able to read their contents without the encryption key.
| Element | Role |
|---|---|
| VPN Client | Program or application on your device |
| VPN Server | Intermediary node through which traffic flows |
| Tunnel | A secure channel between the client and the server |
| Encryption | Transforming data into an unreadable form |
| Protocol | Rules for data transmission within the tunnel |
| Keys | Secret data for encryption and decryption |
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | You launch the VPN application and select a server |
| 2 | The client establishes a connection with the server |
| 3 | Authentication is carried out: login, password, or key |
| 4 | An encrypted tunnel is created |
| 5 | All traffic goes through the tunnel |
| 6 | The server sends requests to the internet on your behalf |
| 7 | Responses are returned to you through the same tunnel |
Encryption turns your data into a set of symbols that cannot be read without a key. Even if the traffic is intercepted, the attacker will only see a meaningless set of bytes.
Tunneling means that data is packed into a special container. This container passes through a public network, but the information inside it is protected. In essence, you create a private network within a public one.
| Protocol | Features | Speed | Security |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenVPN | Flexible, open-source code, reliable | Moderate | High |
| WireGuard | Modern, simple, fast | High | High |
| IKEv2/IPsec | Stable, good for mobile devices | High | High |
| L2TP/IPsec | Widely used, but slower | Moderate | Moderate |
| PPTP | Outdated, insecure | High | Low |
| SSTP | Good at bypassing blocks | Moderate | Moderate |
| Side | What They See Without VPN | What They See With VPN |
|---|---|---|
| ISP | Which sites you visit | Only the fact of connecting to the VPN server |
| Websites | Your real IP and location | IP of the VPN server and its location |
| WiFi Owner | Your requests and data | An encrypted stream |
| VPN Provider | Not involved | May see your traffic |
| Purpose | Description |
|---|---|
| Data Protection | Encryption of traffic in public networks |
| IP Address Change | Access to sites restricted by region |
| Privacy | Hiding browsing history from the ISP |
| Remote Access | Connecting to the company network from home |
| Bypassing Blocks | Access to blocked resources |
| Secure Wi-Fi | Protection in cafes, airports, hotels |
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Personal VPN | For one user or family |
| Corporate VPN | For company employees |
| Free VPN | Speed and traffic limitations |
| Paid VPN | More servers and features |
| VPN on Router | Protection for all devices in the network |
| Browser Extension | Protection for browser traffic only |
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Encryption of Traffic | Decrease in speed |
| IP Address Hiding | Not all VPNs are reliable |
| Protection in Public Networks | VPN provider can see traffic |
| Bypassing Geographical Restrictions | Some sites block VPN |
| Remote Network Access | Configuration is required |
| Ease of Use | Free services make money on data |
VPN does not make you completely anonymous. The VPN provider may keep logs. If they store data, it can be requested or stolen.
Free VPNs often make money by selling data or showing ads. Therefore, for sensitive information, it is better to use paid services with a zero-logging policy.
VPN does not protect against viruses and does not replace antivirus software. It protects the data transmission channel, but not the device itself.
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Using Free VPN for Banking | Risk of data theft |
| Not Checking Log Policy | Data may be transmitted to third parties |
| Connecting to an Unknown Server | Slow speed and risk of interception |
| Ignoring DNS Leaks | Your real IP may be revealed |
| Expecting Complete Anonymity | VPN does not guarantee anonymity |
VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the server. All traffic goes through this tunnel, hiding your real IP address and protecting data from interception.
VPN is useful for protection in public networks, remote access, and bypassing restrictions. However, it does not provide complete anonymity and does not replace other security measures.
When choosing a VPN, it is important to look at the protocols, logging policy, speed, and the reputation of the provider.
