Here is the statistics on the sources of capital of billionaires based on data for the years 2025-2026. The numbers vary slightly depending on the methodology (Altrata, UBS, Hurun, Forbes), but the overall picture is quite stable: completely inherited wealth is a minority, but a significant portion of billionaires started with inheritance or family capital.
According to Altrata (Billionaire Census 2026), out of 3,795 billionaires in the world:
According to UBS (Billionaire Ambitions Report 2025) from 2,919 billionaires:
According to Hurun Global Rich List 2026 from 4,020 billionaires:
| Source | Number of billionaires | Self-made | Inherited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Altrata | 3,795 | 62% | 8% (completely) |
| UBS | 2,919 | 70% | 30% |
| Hurun | 4,020 | 69% | 31% |
\"Self-made\" does not always mean \"from scratch.\" Many of those categorized as self-made started with loans, connections, or startup capital from their family. For example, Statista's research notes that most modern billionaires have used family wealth, privileges, and social connections to get started. Altrata also points out that the share of self-made among billionaires (62%) is 13 percentage points lower than among simply very wealthy people (not billionaires) — that is, having a startup capital or platform plays a significant role in jumping into the ten-figure club.
Completely inherited wealth is decreasing. The share of those who received everything ready-made has fallen from 11% in 2020 to 8% in 2025. The reason is the boom in technology and artificial intelligence, which creates new fortunes faster than inheritance is passed down.
Women billionaires are more likely to inherit. According to Forbes (2026), out of 481 female billionaires, approximately three quarters inherited wealth. Among self-made female billionaires, Forbes notes Rafaela Aponte-Diamond (shipping business, $44.5 billion).
The source of capital is not just \"earned or inherited.\" According to Altrata, 73% of the average billionaire's portfolio consists of concentrated equity packages (public or private companies). It is ownership of stakes in businesses, not just money in the bank, that is the mechanism that allows capital to grow and maintain positions on the list.
In short: most billionaires (60-70%) are people who have created wealth themselves, but about a third either inherited it completely or received a significant starting base and grew it. Pure heirs who did nothing for their wealth are few — about 8%. However, starting advantages in the form of family, capital, or connections play a more noticeable role than the popular myth of the self-made genius starting from scratch.
