On February 15, 2012, a prominent scientist, a well-known Africanist, Boris Borisovich Runov, who worked for about fifty years at the Institute of Africa of the USSR Academy of Sciences (RAS), passed away.

B. B. Runov was born in 1931 in Moscow. In 1956 he graduated from the Faculty of Economics of MGIMO University of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1961, he entered full-time postgraduate studies at the Institute of Africa of the USSR Academy of Sciences, after which he defended his PhD thesis in 1965 on the topic "The activities of United Africa during the collapse of the colonial system in Africa".

B. B. Runov worked at the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1964 (as a senior researcher since 1967). In 1969, he was awarded the scientific title of senior researcher. Since 2004-Leading researcher. From 1974 to 1979, he led the Group on the Impact of the Scientific and Technological Revolution (STD) on African countries, and from 1988 to 1998, he was head of the Sector of Global Problems of our time.

Over the years of his fruitful activity, B. B. Runov has published many scientific works. The main area of his research is the impact of the world scientific and technological revolution on the socio - economic development of African countries. For the first time in Russian literature, B. B. Runov summarized and included in scientific circulation materials on the impact of scientific and technological progress on socio-economic processes in Africa. The first work on this topic was published in 1967 in the collective monograph "The Anti-Imperialist Revolution in Africa".

B. B. Runov was distinguished by his deep erudition and comprehensive approach to the problems under study. He studied, in particular, such aspects as the impact of scientific and technological development on the formation and use of labor resources in Africa, the specifics of the formation of national scientific and technical potentials and the role of the state in this process (state scientific and technical policy), foreign economic relations in the field of science and technology (technology transfer and TNC policy), conditions and prospects use of advanced technologies, etc. During his time at the Institute, he published about 150 scientific papers in these areas, including several individual monographs. B. B. Runov served as a responsible editor and head of the author's team or as a member of the editorial board of a number of collective monographs, and was also a co-author in many collective works. He actively participated in the preparation of scientific reports and analytical materials for the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and various government organizations.

For several years, B. B. Runov combined scientific research with scientific, organizational and editorial work as a deputy Director of the Institute. Executive editor and group leader of the Yearbook "Africa in Soviet Studies" in English. He has repeatedly participated in various scientific conferences, symposia and seminars, including international ones.

In recent years, B. B. Runov has been closely involved in the study of new problems for Africa, the impact of globalization and the information revolution on the economy of the continent. During this period, he published three individual monographs, a number of sections in collective collections, articles in the journals "Asia and Africa Today" and "Orient (Oriens)". He worked until the last day, being a co-author and executive editor of the scientific collection "The Development Potential of sub-Saharan Africa" (Moscow, 2012).

A talented scientist, decent, sympathetic and friendly person, Boris Borisovich Runov has always taken an active life position. He will always remain in the memory of those who worked with him and knew him.
