Книга научного сотрудника Института международного рабочего движения АН СССР кандидата исторических наук С. М. Хенкина посвящена проблемам тенентизма - истории героической борьбы наиболее радикальной части бразильского младшего офицерства - мелкобуржуазных демократов в военных мундирах - против буржуазно-помещичьей олигархии, английского и американского империализма в 1920 - 1930-х годах. Используя разнообразные источники, включая мемуары, специальную литературу, автор освещает истоки, политическую практику, идеологию, социальные связи, причины раскола и распада движения тенентистов, определяет его роль в истории Бразилии и место среди освободительных движений стран Латинской Америки, Азии и Африки.

В монографии дан социальный портрет тенентизма как политического течения, воссозданы общественно-политические взгляды его участников, выявлены основные моменты отношений тенентистов с господствующими классами - традиционной олигархией и нарождающейся буржуазией. Если в первой половине 20-х годов при всех колебаниях тенентистов революционный демократизм, стремление свергнуть реакционное правительство путем открытой вооруженной борьбы брали верх над либеральной апелляцией к "верхам", то на рубеже 20 - 30-х годов отсутствие четкой программы общественных преобразований, государственно-административных навыков, а также "элитарная" психология, мешавшая сближению тенентистов с трудящимися массами, все больше побуждали их искать союзников в лагере господствующих классов.

Серьезное внимание уделено в работе взаимосвязям тенентистского движения с другими революционными потоками, активно действовавшими в Бразилии в тот период, - крестьянскими выступлениями и борьбой рабочего класса. Автор выявляет причины того парадоксального положения, когда тенентисты остались фактически в одиночестве, "хотя в своей борьбе отразили интересы широкого спектра социальных сил (рабочего класса, крестьянства, интеллигенции, либеральной буржуазии), стремившихся к прогрессу Бразилии" (с. 106).

В конце 1920-х годов в рядах бразильских вооруженных сил наметился процесс социально-политического размежевания, затронувший и тенентистов. Значительная часть офицеров вступила на путь сотрудничества с буржуазными кругами, возглавившими революцию 1930 года. Другая группа бывших тенентистов отошла от активной политической деятельности, некоторые офицеры примкнули к фашистской партии Бразильское интегралистское действие (основана в 1932 г.). Наиболее революционная часть тенентистов, осознав необходимость установления отношений с демократическими силами и трудящимися,

вступила в союз с коммунистами. Тем самым, отмечается в книге, "история тенентизма служит еще одной иллюстрацией политической неустойчивости мелкобуржуазной демократии, присущей ей способности занимать в ходе борьбы различные, порой диаметрально противоположные идейно-политические позиции" (с. 133 - 134). Марксистская оценка опыта тенентизма имеет не только историческое значение. Вокруг этого движения до настоящего времени не прекращается острая идеологическая борьба. С. М. Хенкин умело увязывает исторические проблемы с политической практикой современности, с задачами антиимпериалистической борьбы в Латинской Америке.
