"Nelson Mandela turned out to be a courageous man who did not fear to express his view on the Yugoslav problem, "Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia Yegor Stroyev told journalists after his meeting with the president of South Africa here on Thursday. According to Yegor Stroyev, the president of South Africa realises that "this problem cannot be resolved without Russia." The chairman of the Federation Council noted "a sober approach of the South African president to the idea of a multipolar world." Yegor Stroyev informed that his talks with Nelson Mandela focused on yet another two issues -- a system of building state power and the development of inter-regional ties. Speaking on a state system, Stroyev noted that South Africa under conditions of a multinational country managed to build a developing democratic state calmly and without upheavals." Taking part in the meeting with Nelson Mandela were also President of Yakutia Mikhail Nikolayev and head of the administration of the Arkhangelsk region Anatoly Yefremov, who discussed the problem of cooperation with South Africa in the diamond-mining industry. Yegor Stroyev noted that Yakutia had been cooperating with South Africa in this field already for 40 years. The Arkhangelsk region also has the possibilities for developing cooperation with South Africa as it possesses large deposits of precious stones. There are many entrepreneurs in the delegation accompanying the president of South Africa, the chairman of the Federation Council of Russia noted. Addressing journalists, president of South Africa stated that first of all they had come to Moscow to thank Russia and its people for the support rendered to them when they had no friends. He said that he was interested in the activities of the Federation Council of Russia -- the chamber of Russia's regions - as his country also has a similar chamber in the parliament.
