On October 19-21, 2009, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted a scientific conference "The impact of the Global financial and Economic crisis on the system of international relations East-West", organized by the Department of Complex Problems of International Relations of the Institute.
The conference was attended by researchers, government officials, journalists and teachers of higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation and the United States. The 20 reports presented to the participants discussed a range of issues related to the impact of the global financial and economic crisis on various aspects of life in Eastern countries, on international relations in the East and on the system of international relations East-West.
Opening the conference, A. M. Khazanov (Institute of International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences) said that it has become a tradition to gather international experts from time to time in order to hear different points of view on a particular issue. The purpose of the conference is to try to find out how the global economic crisis has affected international relations in Asia and Africa and the system of East-West international relations, what changes are taking place and new trends are emerging, what are the prospects for overcoming the crisis and what are its possible consequences.
To discuss these issues, the speaker emphasized, political scientists and economists were invited to the conference, who offered various ideas and opinions to the audience.
